Quick answer: After job loss in Singapore, an EP or S Pass holder must check the work-pass cancellation date and the expiry of any Short-Term Visit Pass (STVP) issued. MOM allows employers or employment agents to request an STVP of up to 90 days for EP holders or 30 days for S Pass holders. These are maximum periods, not an automatic entitlement. You cannot work on a cancelled pass. A PR’s status is not tied to a particular employer.
Losing a job creates immediate decisions about income, accommodation, family arrangements and immigration status. Start with your actual documents: your termination notice, pass status and any STVP issued. Keep the employment end date, cancellation date and permitted-stay expiry separate when planning your next steps.
The employer or appointed employment agent must cancel the pass within one week after the last day of notice. Once cancelled, related family passes are also cancelled. If you and your family remain in Singapore, confirm each person’s valid stay rather than assuming everyone has the same deadline.
Use the expiry shown on the issued STVP. Do not calculate your deadline from the date you received your termination notice. See MOM’s EP cancellation guidance and S Pass cancellation guidance.
A new employer must apply for the appropriate work pass. A job offer, pending application or in-principle approval (IPA) does not by itself let you start work. The pass must be issued; the notification letter then explains the work authorisation while you await the card. Read our S Pass IPA and issuance guide for the post-approval steps.
The new role must meet the relevant requirements. Our S Pass eligibility guide explains the candidate and employer checks. For EP applications, follow MOM’s application and issuance process.

PR status is different from an employer-sponsored work pass. Losing a job does not itself trigger EP or S Pass cancellation rules for a PR. However, permanent residence and a Re-Entry Permit (REP) are different: the REP is relevant when travelling abroad and returning as a PR. Check ICA’s REP requirements before making travel plans, particularly if your permit is approaching expiry.
A PR application is not a substitute for maintaining valid immigration status. ICA lists EP and S Pass holders among the categories that may apply, but eligibility does not guarantee approval. If employment changes while an application is pending, check the update requirements with ICA. Read ICA’s PR eligibility guidance and our EP-to-PR transition guide when considering longer-term plans.
No. The relevant deadline is the expiry of the stay actually granted. EP and S Pass cancellation arrangements differ; refer to the pass-specific guidance above.
Follow the notification letter issued after the new pass is issued. Do not confuse waiting for the physical card with waiting for application approval.
An STVP is not work authorisation. Before undertaking work for a business, establish which pass or permission is required for the proposed activity.
