For a detailed walkthrough of preparation and the application process, read our Singapore citizenship application guide.
Singapore citizenship can affect your family’s education, healthcare, housing and long-term plans. Each benefit has its own qualifying conditions. Review these alongside the responsibilities of citizenship before deciding to apply.

A Singapore passport offers convenient international travel, but entry conditions depend on your destination and purpose of travel. Visa-free access does not remove requirements such as electronic travel authorisations or permission to work.
Before booking, check the destination’s official entry rules and MFA’s travel advice.

Citizens can receive higher subsidies than PRs for eligible public healthcare services. The amount depends on the scheme, treatment, ward class and means-test assessment.
For example, review MOH’s acute inpatient subsidy rules when comparing hospital costs. Citizenship does not make all treatment free.

Citizens generally pay lower school fees than PRs and international students in government and government-aided schools. Fees vary by education level and school type, so use MOE’s school fees checker for your child’s circumstances.
Eligible Singaporean students can use Edusave for approved school expenses, including miscellaneous fees. Financial assistance and awards have separate conditions. Independent-school and tertiary fees should be checked with the institution concerned.

Citizens can work in Singapore without an employer-sponsored work pass. However, citizenship does not guarantee a job: employers still assess qualifications, experience and suitability for each role.

Citizens may sponsor eligible family members for PR, including a spouse, an unmarried child below 21 who meets ICA’s birth or adoption conditions, and an aged parent where the citizen sponsor is at least 21.
PRs can also sponsor an eligible spouse or child. Sponsorship allows an application to be considered; it does not guarantee approval. Check ICA’s family-based PR categories before applying.

CPF supports retirement, housing and healthcare needs. Both citizens and PRs participate, so it should not be treated as a benefit exclusive to citizenship.
Employee and employer contributions depend on factors such as age, wages and PR status. Check the CPF contribution rates applicable to you rather than assuming a single rate applies to everyone.

HDB eligibility
Citizenship can open access to new HDB flats and housing grants, subject to the relevant scheme. Age, family nucleus, income and property ownership conditions still apply. Citizenship alone does not make every applicant eligible for a BTO flat.
For PR-only households buying a resale flat, the relevant applicants must generally have held PR status for at least three years. Singles have different eligibility rules. Start with HDB’s flat-buying guidance and obtain an HDB Flat Eligibility letter.
Property taxes
A citizen buying a first residential property generally does not pay Additional Buyer’s Stamp Duty, but Buyer’s Stamp Duty still applies. Joint purchases, existing property interests and remission rules can change the result. Use IRAS’s ABSD guidance to assess your purchase.

Support for families depends on the child’s citizenship, birth or adoption circumstances, household profile and the scheme’s effective dates.
Singapore does not permit adult dual citizenship. Follow ICA’s approval instructions on renouncing foreign citizenship and completing citizenship formalities.
Different rules apply to minors. Those who acquired citizenship by descent or registration must take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty after turning 21 and before their 22nd birthday to retain it. Foreign-citizenship documentation may also be required. See ICA’s oath-taking requirements for minors.
National Service obligations must be considered separately; holding another nationality does not by itself remove them.
Male Singapore citizens and PRs are required to serve National Service unless exempted. NS-liable individuals register at age 16½ and are generally enlisted from age 18.
Families should check the rules on registration, study deferment and overseas travel before making plans. Refer to CMPB’s pre-enlistment guidance for the requirements that apply.
CPF savings are subject to withdrawal rules. From age 55, the amount available depends on your balances, retirement sum requirements and any applicable property conditions. See CPF Board’s guidance on withdrawals from age 55.
Retirement payouts can generally begin between ages 65 and 70. CPF LIFE provides lifelong monthly payouts; other retirement arrangements may pay only until savings run out. The amount depends on your savings and payout choices. Read about starting or deferring CPF payouts.
