The next vital step after the Singapore PR application is receiving an In-Principle Approval letter, or short, IPA letter.
Congratulations if you are here because you have gotten your In-Principal Approval (IPA)!
If you are currently waiting for your Singapore PR application status and you wonder what you would need to do once the PR application is approved, you have come to the right place.
Before we explain more about the IPA letter, you need to know how you can check your Singapore PR application status.

From the time of submission, applicants can check the progress of their Singapore PR application through ICA’s official website. You will need your SingPass login to proceed.
The outcome of a successful PR application will be reflected on ICA’s portal, as APPROVED.
ICA will mail the physical IPA letter to the successful applicant’s registered residential address.
The In-Principle Approval Letter, or short for IPA letter, is something all successful Singapore PR applicants will receive. It is the next vital step in the Singapore PR process.
It consists of the steps to complete the Singapore PR formalities. It is valid for two months from the stated date of issue, and applicants are expected to complete the necessary actions by then.
We would advise you to read the IPA letter carefully.
Example of an In-Principle Approval Letter
There are four main actions mentioned in the IPA letter in relation:
The ICA requires all successful Singapore PR applicants to undergo a compulsory medical check-up.
Visit any legal Singapore medical centres of your choice. You will need to bring two documents for the medical check-up:
– The IPA letter
– The medical form (that is attached in the IPA package mailed to you)
Typically, it may take up to two weeks to obtain the medical certification. However, this is subject to the medical centre visit. It is advised to check with the medical centre beforehand.
If you submitted a medical report to MOM or ICA just one or two years ago, you do not have to go for a medical check-up. You will only need to fill up the medical form.
Bringing you affordable, bespoke screening and treatment, ATA Medical is a one-stop centre for all your healthcare needs – including chest x-ray, mammograms and ultrasound scans.
A stone’s throw away from Tanjong Pagar MRT station, ATA Medical provides Singapore PR medical check-ups at an affordable rate. Request for the same-day report is possible.

One of the benefits of Singapore PR is: healthcare subsidy.
All Singapore Permanent Residents need to register for insurance with MediShield Life.
MediShield Life is a basic national health insurance plan that provides universal coverage to all Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents. Their dependants can also protect with MediShield – allowing them to have the ability to pay for high medical expenses of severe or chronic diseases.
New Singapore PR status holders above the age of 30 must have the CareShield Life plan, a long-term care insurance plan.
You will find a checklist of documents that ICA requires for verification in the IPA letter.
You can expect the documents listed to be the ones you originally submitted during your Singapore PR application.
Ensure you gather these documents correctly before your in-person appointment with an ICA officer.
Upon receiving the medical report (or medical certificate), insurance documents and all other mandatory documents listed in the IPA letter, successful Singapore PR applicants can proceed to book an in-person appointment with ICA.
The ICA officer will verify all of them during the appointment. You can expect the verifying process to take about an hour.
After the completion of the verification process, the Singapore PR applicants will receive:
These will be given on the same day. You must make another ICA appointment to collect your official identity card.
Now, we would say that your Singapore PR formalities are COMPLETE.

Receiving an IPA letter is an indication of your Singapore PR application approval.
However, receiving the IPA letter does not imply that you are now a Singapore PR. There are still some steps to take for the completion of formalities before your PR is officialised.
To sum it up, here are the actions you need to do after getting your Singapore PR IPA letter:
You may risk losing your Singapore PR approval if you do not complete the abovementioned actions. So, you must ensure that you can get everything settled before the IPA letter expires!
And if a Singapore PR has sights on applying for Singapore Citizenship, you can do so after two years. See the full eligibility of a Singapore Citizenship application here.
You must log in to ICA’s official website with your Singpass. The portal will show the approval online.
ICA will also mail the in-principal approval letter to your registered residential address.
A valid re-entry permit (REP) allows a Singapore permanent resident to retain their PR status when travelling out of Singapore. The REP can last up to five years.
A Singapore PR will risk losing his PR status when:
Singapore PRs need to ensure that their REP is valid before going abroad. It is always advisable to respond to ICA’s letter.
Read more about the REPÂ here.
You need to submit a request for a deadline extension to the ICA.
It is not uncommon to hear such instances. The ICA will approve if you submit the request promptly, explaining why you need to extend the deadline.
We must emphasise that once the IPA letter expires and you have not completed the necessary actions, ICA may revoke their approval. In short, the PR formalities are deemed incomplete, and your Singapore PR status will not be valid anymore.
Please share with us some details about your needs, we will get back to you.
