*A successful Singapore Citizenship client of The Immigration People partly contributed to this post. He and his family have been in Singapore for over six years and was approved after two years of anxious waiting. He hoped this post could share insights about the Singapore citizenship journey.
Finally, after two years of waiting, Mark (not his real name) received an important letter from ICA. The envelope outside says very visibly that the letter comes from ICA, with a bold message “ON GOVERNMENT SERVICE” – one that he was so anxiously waiting for. In the first paragraph, in bold and marked in a grey-shadowed box, it says:
“Your application for Singapore Citizenship has been approved-in-principle. You are at the second stage of your Singapore Citizenship application process.”

For Mark, the In-Principal Approval (IPA) letter came at quite a good time since his family was supposed to renew their Singapore PR re-entry permit soon.
Before officially becoming a Singapore citizen, Mark needed to complete the Singapore Citizenship Journey.
The Singapore citizenship journey is mandatory for all newly approved Singapore citizens. It comprises three components:
These are essential to enrich new citizens’ understanding of Singapore and develop a natural appreciation for the country. The Singapore citizenship journey aims to help new citizens integrate better into Singapore’s norms and culture.
These components must be done within the date stated on the IPA letter.
Please complete the journey to ensure your successful citizenship application is still valid! That aside, we knew that to obtain Singapore Citizenship, you are expected to renounce your foreign citizenship or surrender your foreign passport – which will be done later.

All new Singapore citizens need to go through an online journey to understand Singapore, like its history, politics, geography, and the country’s efforts to build a cohesive society.
Successful applicants from 16 to 60 years old must complete the e-journey individually (those below 16 are exempted). After logging in with your SingPass, enter your IPA date. Your application ID should be shown after doing so. It is best to check all your details like your current address, mobile phone and e-mail.
The e-journey consists of four chapters and a final survey. You do not need to finish the chapter in one go; you can leave and come back at any time, and all your previous progress will be automatically saved.

Next in line is to secure a slot for the Singapore Experiential Tour (SET). In summary, it is a half-day tour to physically bring new citizens to Singapore’s historical landmarks and national institutions. It allows new Singapore citizens to learn even more about this nation’s history and how we have overcome various challenges (transportation, resources, water, defence and more) throughout the years.
The last part of the Singapore Citizenship Journey is participating in the Community Sharing Session. It is an event to actively participate in your community – by getting to know your neighbourhood better (meet your fellow residents and Grass Root Leaders (GRL)).
Community sharing session as part of the Singapore Citizenship Journey | MOTHERSHIP
In this session, you will reflect on your journey towards citizenship and share your hopes and aspirations for Singapore. The GRLs and Integration & Naturalisation Champions (INCs) from the People’s Association will also share their experiences living in a multi-racial and multi-religious society and provide valuable information to help us new Singapore citizens settle nicely into our community.
After completing the Singapore citizenship journey, you should receive an email from ICA stating a status update on your application for Singapore Citizenship. You can access the ICA portal to see your final stage approval letter.
You can find the appointment date from the letter to report to ICA for Singapore Citizenship registration and take the Oath of renunciation. This is the time when you renounce your other citizenship. We recommend checking your home country’s renunciation requirements before reaching this stage because dual citizenship is prohibited in Singapore.
Don’t forget to prepare a photocopy of your renunciation letter before heading to the ICA’s office for your appointment!
At the final stage, you will register your long-awaited pink Singapore NRIC! You will also receive the Singapore citizenship certificate like any new Singapore citizen.
Now, you officially hold one of the most powerful passports in the world and have the rights to all the benefits of Singapore citizenship, like visa-free travelling, better healthcare subsidies, housing priority and more.
